I'm An Eavesdropper

Last night, I took Ten and Twelve to our community pool. When we arrived there, we noticed about five 16 year old girls sitting in the jacuzzi. Ten and Twelve proceeded to enter the pool, and I proceeded to 'eavesdrop' on the conversations eminating from the jacuzzi. (These 16 year old girls were certainly not whispering!).

Did you know that these girls:
1) Often lie about where they are going, and think it's o.k.?
2) Push their curfew to the limit, because they know their parents don't really mean it?
3) Are planning to go to the local mountains in the winter overnight, and want to invite boys, but only cute ones, and somehow not tell their parents?

Well now you know.

Teenagers... some of them have about as much sense as a box of rocks.

Sacrilege! It was all for show I bet. I remember doing that except it was more like bowling, slumber party with dudes, and talk of the next board game.

I would be more inclined to believe that these girls were lieing to each other, but I wouldn't put it past them to try the other stuff too.

I know that I pushed my cerfew by actually being home on time but sitting on the porch with my boyfriend for hours later.

Well now that you know, I'm betting that your kids won't get away with any of that.

Curfew, what curfew? Don't sixteen year olds know everything? Why would they have curfews?

Meno - I'm pretty sure that they were going to plan World Domination after I left.

Pam - And some of them don't even have that much sense!

Egan - I hope you're right and it was just for show. Otherwise, I will have to put GPS devices on both Ten and Twelve. (did they happen to cover this in your childbirth classes?)

Renee - I hope they were lying to each other. They couldn't possibly be up to so much 'no good', could they?

Ms. Chica - Yeah, what's up with the curfew thing? Just because they live in their parents houses, doesn't mean they should have to follow their parents, clearly unfair, rules (especially curfews) Now why didn't I think of that?

re: my idea. this situation is supposed to be for just at night and the bags will either be disposed of or tied off when not in use. I've already got a handy light I can use in there and a glow in the dark bracelet to light up where the light is.

Just look upon this eavesdropping exercise as a mom learning experience...Twelve will be Sixteen in no time. Hopefully all this talk from girls that age is just that...talk!

Hmmm, I remember being 16 ... I bet a lot of it was all talk, no action ... I know that's how it was for me !!
Take care, Meow

I think they were lying and wishful thinking.

Just continue to keep an eye on the kids that Ten and Twelve hang with and you'll be fine.

Don't know if it's real or not but I am sure you are happy you still have 4 years to get to the worry point.

Problem is now you have 4 years with something to worry about.

My 16 year old daughter is convinced that as soon as she gets her license she will be driving over to Florida, up to Kentucky, and possibly to San Diego to visit friends. There is a serious lack of reality in the 16 yo brain.

Renee - What a great idea to use a glow in the dark bracelet to highlight where the real light is.

Joan - I hope it's just talk too!

Meow (aka Connie) - I hope that you are right. I don't remember doing that at 16.

Patti - I do keep an eye on the friends that Ten and Twelve have. I've noticed that it's harder and harder to do that.

The Moose Buyer - Oh boy, 4 years to worry about what hasn't happened and then years to worry that it might.

Marsha - Boy is she in for a rude awakening.

Man...I read that and I am transported back in time and a reminder of what a nerd I was.

When I told my mom I was going to the library...I went to the library. I didn't have curfew - but was always home 30 minutes to an hour before I said I would be and the boys? Well..I was never really interested enough in any of the boys to lie about doing anything with them overnight.

So, while I was a nerd, at least my mom could trust me, right?

Arm - I was such a nerd too. I did have a curfew, and I remember arguing with my mother, trying to convince her to extend it...which eventually, she did.
