The Renaming of Twelve

In exactly one month from today, Twelve will become Thirteen. Egads. I will officially become the mother of a teenager.

Having survived this past year as Twelve's mother, I certainly feel that I have had a taste of what is to come. Notice I said a taste, and not I know what is to come. I am trying to figure out whether or not I will refer to Twelve as Thirteen. I've gotten so used to calling her Twelve, that sometimes I call her that when I am speaking about her, as if that is her real name. Shocked are you that Twelve isn't her real name? I know it's hard to believe. I mean each of you must know at least ten girls with that name. Wasn't one of your best friends in 7th grade called Twelve?

I've decided that since DH and I named Twelve at her birth, and my sister and Twelve helped me name Twelve for the purpose of this blog, I feel that it's only right for my blog friends to help me come up with a name for Twelve once she becomes Thirteen. (Twelve has requested that she have some input in the choice of her new name.) I know that I can call her Thirteen, but that means that next year (provided that I am still blogging) I will have to once again change her name and start calling her Fourteen. And that also means that these fingers will have to get reused to typing a different name for her every year.

So...any suggestions?

Well, you could try a more international style, such as Treize (French), Dreizehn (German), or Tredici (Italian). I do not know the Spanish for thirteen, but being in So Cal, you ought to be able to find that out easily enough :>)

Hmmm... I see your dilemna here. I am somewhat surprised her name isn't Twelve!... geeze... well, so what you need is an all purpose name to carry on through the blogging years.... "Princess" :)
I dunno... but whatever you choose, I'm sure it'll fit her perfectly!

I agree with Michele about the all purpose name...but I was thinking "Teeny" it cutens up Teen and will last until she's 20 and by then I'm sure you'll have a bunch of names for her...some that are even fit to type. ;)

But what about Ten?

BTW: Darly didn't have much choice in her blog name and she's not a fan of it at all. But it works for me.

Since I was involved with both Twelve's blog name AND her birth name (you remember...I'm the one who threw her name into the baby name search), I'm going to add my two cents here. I'd like to suggest the name "Elle" as Twelve's new blog name. It's French for "she"; it's feminine; it's the name of a famous fashion magazine; she'd share the name with model Elle MacPherson; and most, importantly, it "sounds" like the perfect name for my niece who is leaving her childhood behind and moving into her teen years.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Princess.

While every child is different for me and many of my friends, being a mom of a teen in infinitely better and more peaceful than being a mom of a tween. Hope the same is true for you. The mean girl thing goes away, the girls become real friends who support and love one another instead of all the fighting. The drama and backtalk subsides. At sixteen my daughter is almost human again.

I was going to say Elle too. I like that and you won't have to change it as the years go by.

Joan has an unfair advantage since she knows the child, uh I mean young lady. I'll go with Rosebud (literary reference for a pretty young lady).

As someone who loves the French language, I vote for Elle!
Go Joan for this grand idea.

Now, the question is, what will you be calling Ten when he is Eleven??

Ralph - An international flavor sounds good. Howver all of the foreign languages thirteens sound masculine to me. (FYI thirteen in Spanish is "trece".)

Michele - It is quite the dilemna. Princess seems to work well for the under ten crowd, and for the daughter on "Father Knows Best". We'll see.

Renee - Teeny is a cute suggestion, but it reminds me of a chichuaua.

Joan - I like the name "Elle", but Twelve isn't so sure. Maybe it will need to grow on her to be in the running.

Marsha - I like your suggestion. Of course it will take me a long time to type her name if I choose this it. Thanks for reminding me that there will be a light at the end of the teen tunnel.

The Moose Buyer - Your suggestion is duly noted. Not having to change it every year is a benefit.

Patches - Rosebud is an interesting name, but I'm not sure if Twelve would want to be compared to a sled...just saying.

Patti - That's 3 votes for Elle. As for Ten...well that'll be grist for a different post. Unless you can come up with a suggestion now.

Hi. Its my first time to your blog and its great! I've only been a mom for a year and already I'm TIRED.

How about referring to your daughter as GrownUp. Teenagers ARE grownups. Aren't they? ;)

for ten, I suggest Dodger as in the Artful Dodger from Oliver and besides, he is a big Dodger fan.

As for twelve, tell her Elle is better than "dimples".

How about Raging Hormone Case?

No? Too much truth in advertising. I feel your pain.

You might as well just give in and go with Her Majesty. Maybe HM for short.

Do you not have nicknames that you call each other. For years I have been called Nin that was only because when I was born my elder sister couldnt say Melinda and would call me Ninda that became Nin. My son is Shark, My eldest daughter BB which are her initials and my Middle daughter Treen. I am not really a big fan of nicknames but somehow we have all managed to get one!! I am sure in a months time you will have come up with something !!

Amanda - Welcome to my blog. Glad that you like it:~) She thinks she's grown up, but then she remembers that she still needs her mommy.

The Moose Buyer - I will run that suggestion past Ten. You're right...Elle is better than dimples and a bunch of other names I can think to call her right about now.

Meno - Actually, that might be a better name for me, right now.

Pam - I think that Twelve would love to be called 'Your Majesty'. 'Your Royal Pain In the Neck Sometimes' might better describe her.

thinking...thinking...maybe Ten can be LB (little brother)

I'll be back if I come up with any other * brilliant * suggestions

I have always called my kids by their ages as opposed to their names on my blog.

When they have a birthday, I just change to the next number. You get used to it, but then again, they don't read my blog so I don't know if they'd want to have an actual "name" or not.

Thirteen, an exciting birthday!!

Patti - LB could work...when Ten's birthday comes up, I will check it out;~)

Sari - I may stick with numbers...it certainly captures where they are chronologically.
